Family Academy has forged a new genre of education by blending the best aspects of private school and home education. Since 1981, we have worked to develop programs to train teachers and parents to become more effective in their homeschooling efforts. Additionally, we help the local region establish a private school extension program, a school-without-walls. Academy Northwest, our K-12 accredited private school in Washington State, provides the model for each state or region to customize the FA program to fit that community's needs. The school keeps the official educational records and high school transcripts, issues the high school diploma, holds local events such as student learning activities, field studies, and graduation ceremonies.
The FA teacher consultants are typically experienced classroom teachers who saw the failings of the traditional system and chose to homeschool their own children. To become a Family Academy teacher consultant, teachers must be committed to Christ and desire to assist homeschool families. The teacher must complete the FA orientation program to refocus their skills to the homeschooling sphere as educational consultants. They learn how to apply these skills to develop learning programs that tailor curriculum and learning projects to the individual studentÁs academic needs and learning style. These skills are honed through assignments developed by Family Academy in our Teacher Consultant Manual and mentoring with FA staff and other teacher consultants. Once the orientation process is completed, the teacher will contract to provide services through Academy Northwest or the closest affiliated school.
Parents are helped both directly and indirectly by Family Academy. Directly, parents can participate in workshops and use publications offered through Family Academy such as our "Able To Teach" homeschool parent training course offered on-line and as a live class, as well as Homeschooling the High School, both a book and a one-day seminar. Indirectly, the assistance parents receive from their FA teacher consultant comes via frequent inservice and continuing education seminars developed by Family Academy which our teachers attend. Many of these are videoed archived through the TC Resource Center for new teachers. Moreover, our bookstore offers only the best curriculum and home education resources from which parents, students, and teachers can select quality learning materials.
